There are a lot of different types of dentists out there. Do you know which one is right for your family? The answer is easy: a family dentist. Family dentists are excellent options because they treat patients of different ages and across the wide spectrum of dental health. If you would like to know more about family dentistry, check out these five questions and answers just below.

1.) Why Choose a Provider Who Offers Family Dentistry?

You can find dentists who focus in just about everything: pediatrics, geriatrics, cosmetics, etc., but do you really want to drive all over town to a dozen different dentists for your entire family? Although sometimes it’s necessary to see a specialist for a major complication, for most treatments a family dentist can treat your entire family. They offer services for children, teens, adults and the elderly. Some can even provide great cosmetic services, such as porcelain veneers and dental implants.

2.) What Makes a Good Family Dentist?

A good family dentist has the ability to treat patients at any age. From young children who have just gotten their first tooth to elderly patients who struggle with mobility, a good family dentist can treat them for most issues. However, a good family dentist also has the training and experience to provide all these services. For example, if your family dentist offers root canal therapy, make sure they have continuing education that specializes in root canal therapy.

3.) How Can a Family Dentist Help Children?

One of the most important jobs a family dentistry provider has is helping children. Childhood is an important time when it comes to oral health because this is where it all begins. Taking good care of your child’s primary teeth leads to healthier permanent teeth. Plus, the habits children learn at a young age stick for life. A good family dentist can help children by ensuring primary teeth are healthy, educating children about their oral health — and looking for potential future problems. The dentist can also teach you about how to help your child care for their smile at home.

4.) How Can a Family Dentist Help Geriatric Patients?

Geriatric patients may struggle with more oral concerns than younger adults. Sometimes, it’s due to a lifetime of poor oral hygiene, other times it’s just normal aging and typical wear and tear from a long life. Whatever the cause, a family dentist can treat elderly patients and help them deal with many problems. Common issues geriatric patients face include dry mouth, gum disease and missing teeth. Plus, elderly patients often have other medical conditions that may affect their oral health. Family dentists can treat these problems, so elderly patients can have a better quality of life.

5.) Do Family Dentists Provide Cosmetic Services?

You don’t have to go see an expensive cosmetic dental specialist to get great cosmetic procedures because many family dentists also offer cosmetic treatments. With the growing demand for beautiful smiles, cosmetic dentistry has become a staple of the field, so even dentists who don’t specialize in it need to have some experience to compete. Many dentists attend continuing education classes teaching cosmetic dentistry procedures, so that they can craft gorgeous smiles for their patients while also providing preventative care to keep teeth healthy.

Choosing a dentist who offers family dentistry services is an excellent option. You can have your entire family treated at one location, and they can help with preventative care, restorative care and cosmetic care. 5 Kids Dentistry FAQs

kids dentistry

Knowing how to take care of your own teeth can be hard enough, but if you have a child, you also have to worry about their oral health. It can be difficult to know what is right. The most important steps are to find a good dentist that offers kids dentistry services and to know how to care for your child’s teeth at home. Check out these five FAQs.

How Do You Clean Your Baby’s Mouth?

Even if your baby doesn’t have teeth, you should keep the mouth clean. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and warm water or even a soft washcloth and warm water to remove any plaque or residue from their gums. This will help keep their teeth healthy and free of decay once they do erupt. Once their teeth erupt, continue cleaning teeth and gums with a toothbrush/cloth and warm water. Do this at least once a day just before bedtime.

When Should You First Take Your Child to the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry urges parents to bring their child in for their first dental cleaning and examination by the time the first tooth erupts. However, you should bring your child in no later than the first year of age. During these initial examinations, the dentist probably won’t find decay or serious complications. However, they will take this time to get to know you and your child and your child’s mouth. The dentist will look for potential future problems and teach you how to care for your child’s mouth at home and what kids dentistry services are available. This is also a good chance to get kids used to people other than mom or dad brushing their teeth.

Do Primary Teeth Really Matter?

These first dental examinations are important. Even though your child will lose their primary teeth, they are still important to care for. For starters, failing to care for your child’s primary teeth can cause immediate problems. If decay occurs, it can lead to pain or even loose teeth, which can make it difficult for your child to eat and speak. However, the problems don’t end there. Primary teeth help create a path, and your child’s permanent teeth follow this path when they erupt. Without the primary teeth, this path is lost, and it’s difficult for teeth to erupt properly.

When Should Your Child Start Using Toothpaste?

Once the first tooth erupts, you can start using a small amount of toothpaste when cleaning. Simply wipe a tiny amount on the brush and clean the tooth. When your child is three to six years of age, you can start using a pea-sized amount. When your child is ready to brush their teeth on their own, allow them to do so, but make sure you supervise them and instruct them until they can brush properly and completely.

Should You Consider Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a popular kids dentistry procedure, and they are great at helping to protect your child’s teeth from decay. Back teeth have a lot of crevices (pits and fissures) on the chewing surfaces. Food and plaque can get caught in here and lead to decay. Sealants fill in these crevices. Your child can eat and talk like normal, but the food and plaque can’t get stuck.

Your child’s oral health is important, and you should begin teaching good oral hygiene habits at a young age. At Landmark Dental Group, the dentists have all the skills and kids dentistry procedures available to help treat your child’s smile and help it stay healthy for life. Excellent Family Dentists in Santa Cruz

If you’re looking for good family dentists in the Santa Cruz area, look no further than the doctors at Landmark Dental Group. Landmark offers a robust selection of services and procedures for the young, old and everyone in between. Whether you’re just trying to protect your child’s first teeth or wanting to improve the look of your smile, Landmark Dental Group has the services to meet your needs.

Dental Services for Children

Landmark Dental Group welcomes children and encourages parents to bring their children in for regular checkups and cleanings. Even though primary teeth are temporary, they play an important role in your child’s lifetime oral health. Primary teeth are place holders for permanent teeth. It’s important to care for them properly so that permanent teeth come in healthy and strong. Plus, teaching your child healthy oral habits at a young age will make it easier for them to stick with them when they are older. Landmark’s dentists will help educate you about your child’s growing smile and offer services to help protect your child’s teeth, such as dental sealants.

Dental Services for the Elderly

Landmark Dental Group also offers specialized services for elderly patients. Just like elderly patients often require a little more medical care than younger patients, their mouths require a little more attention too. A lifetime of using their teeth and normal aging can cause problems, such as gum disease, gum recession, dry mouth, root decay and missing teeth. However, Landmark’s assistance doesn’t end there. Elderly patients often also have other medical problems or take many medications. The dentists at Landmark Dental have the experience to help treat these patients and explain how their co-existing medical conditions and medications can affect their oral health.

Preventative and Restorative Care

Everyone can benefit from preventative care regardless of age, because it is the most important step in creating and keeping a healthy smile. Landmark’s family dentists provide all the preventative services you need to ensure your mouth is strong. Regular examinations, regular cleanings and scaling and root planing are available. However, if you already have a problem, such as a cavity, Landmark family dentists can treat the cavity and even use tooth-colored fillings, so it won’t look as if you had anything done. Extractions and root canal treatments are also available for infections or severely damaged teeth.

Cosmetic Procedures

Unfortunately, sometimes you don’t have the smile you want. Genetics, normal wear and tear or bad oral hygiene may mean your teeth are crooked, stained or damaged. However, at Landmark Dental, you can get the smile you’ve always wanted because the dentists have extensive education in cosmetic and esthetic dentistry. Tooth whitening will get your teeth bright white. If you have some crookedness, unevenness, gapping or chips, dental veneers can be an excellent option. For weak teeth, porcelain dental crowns can strengthen teeth and leave them looking great. Last, if you have missing teeth, Landmark Dental Group offers dentures, dental bridges and even dental implants.

Choosing good family dentists is an important part of your oral health, and Landmark Dental Group’s dentists treat patients of any age. Plus, they can fix many problems, from a simple cavity to a missing tooth. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

Dr. Scott J Weston’s Education and Awards

Dr. Weston is the other Santa Cruz dentist at Landmark Dental Group, and like Dr. Tran, he attended the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. He proves his skills with every patient he sees at Landmark Dental Group. While attending school, Dr. Weston also received recognition for his achievements. He won the Francis A. Sooy Award for Outstanding Dental Professional, and he has earned other awards for his work in restorative dentistry.

Dr. Weston also spent time at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, where he participated in a General Practice Residency. A General Dentist Office in Santa Cruz With a Lot to Offer

A General Dentist Office in Santa Cruz

photo credit: Kalim | Adobe Stock

When choosing your general dentist, you want someone who has a lot to offer. Nobody wants to have to go to another dentist for services that aren’t offered by their general dentist. At Landmark Dental Group, you don’t have to worry about being sent to other dentists for treatments that you need because they offer a robust spectrum of services for young and old alike.

Pediatric Services

Children require special treatment because childhood is an important time. When you begin good oral habits and care early, you are more likely to continue them throughout life, ensuring you have a beautiful, healthy smile. Landmark offers children’s services, such as sealants, and they help educate kids and parents about how to keep smiles healthy.

Geriatric Services

The elderly also require specialized services. They suffer from many oral ailments as a result of advanced age. Landmark can help geriatric patients who suffer from dry mouth, gum recession and other problems that are associated with older age. They even have the experience to treat patients with co-existing medical problems, multiple medications and mobility issues.

Preventative and Minor Restorative Services

Of course, one thing that every general dentist should be able to provide are preventative services, such as cleanings, exams, X-rays and scaling and root planing. It’s important to keep up on your oral preventative care so that you don’t develop major problems that are painful and expensive to fix. If you do develop a minor problem, such as a cavity, Landmark also offers restorative services, such as tooth-colored fillings.

Root Canal Therapy

Whether from trauma or poor oral hygiene, one of your teeth may develop an infection. Tooth abscesses can be incredibly painful, and they must be treated to prevent them from spreading. Root canal therapy is a common way to treat tooth infections without the need to extract the tooth. Your dentist will remove the infection and tooth pulp and put a crown on it. Even without the pulp, your tooth will function properly.

Extractions and Tooth Replacement

Sometimes, you can’t avoid a tooth extraction. For example, if your tooth has severe decay and breaks at the gum line, an extraction may be the best option, and Landmark Dental Group offers extraction services. However, more importantly, they offer tooth replacement options, so you don’t have to suffer with the difficulties or embarrassment of a missing tooth. Tooth replacement services include dentures, dental bridges and dental implants.

Veneers and Dental Crowns

Porcelain veneers are an extremely popular cosmetic dental procedure because they do a fabulous job of making your front teeth look flawless. Whether you have some crowding, gapping, chips or uneven teeth, veneers can help. If your teeth are weak from a root canal treatment, big fillings, etc., veneers may not be a good option. Landmark Dental, however, offers porcelain dental crowns. They can make your teeth look amazing, and they strengthen weak teeth, as well.

Tooth Whitening

Another popular cosmetic dental procedure is tooth whitening. Landmark Dental Group offers at-home whitening, which is more effective than over-the-counter products and cheaper than in-office whitening. Your results will depend on how long you wear the trays and how well your teeth absorb the whitening agent, but your dentist will help you reach your desired shade.

Don’t choose a general dentist that only offers a handful of services. A good general dentist can provide most or all of the services you and your family might need. From routine cleanings to dental implants, Landmark Dental has all the services you need. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

Gentle Santa Cruz Dentist Offering Childrens’ Services

Children's Dentistry Santa Cruz

photo credit: tatsushi | Adobe Stock

Good oral habits should start at an early age, which is why Landmark Dental Group offers children’s services and urges parents to bring kids in as soon as they get their first tooth. If you have a child and are looking for a dentist, you should consider Landmark Dental. They offer gentle procedures that will keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

Landmark Dental Welcomes Young Patients

It’s suggested by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that your child have their first dental visit once their first tooth erupts; Landmark Dental Group welcomes babies, toddlers and children alike. Of course, your child probably isn’t going to need much done at this point in time, but these primary visits are about getting to know your child and to make sure that teeth and gums are developing properly.

The dentist can evaluate your child’s oral health and hygiene, which helps anticipate and prevent any future problems. It’s also important for your child to continue visiting the dentist so he or she becomes comfortable with going. It’s easy to develop a fear of going to the dentist, but if you get your child used to visits, dental trips won’t become traumatic.

They Provide Gentle Services for Kids

Everyone wants their trip to the dentist to be effective, but pain-free. Children are no different. However, they’re probably more concerned with the pain-free part than the effective part. Luckily, at Landmark Dental Group, you don’t have to choose.

Whether for children, adults or geriatrics, all their services are effective enough to treat the problem — but gentle enough to prevent pain and fear of the dentist. These gentle services help engrave into your child’s brain that going to the dentist isn’t an ordeal. Visits are quick and made to be as comfortable as possible, so they won’t be inclined to skip visits as adults.

Doctors and Staff Help Educate Parents

The doctors and staff alone can’t keep your child’s teeth healthy. It’s a team effort, and you are a huge part of that team. However, Landmark Dental Group will give you the helping hand you need to help care for your child’s teeth at home.

Do you know the importance of primary teeth? Do you know when your child should start using toothpaste? Luckily, you don’t have to know everything because the doctors and staff at Landmark will help educate you and teach you what you need to know to help your child develop a healthy smile from day one.

Failing to care for your child’s oral health early on can cause terrible problems in their future. They won’t have the education or learned habits to keep their teeth healthy as adults. At Landmark Dental Group, you, the doctors, and staff will work together to teach those healthy habits and promote good oral health for life. For more information, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

Dental Assistants

Dental Assistants: Leslie, Marichelle, Thelma, Kara, and Rebekah

Leslie: Born and raised in Santa Cruz, I have been in the dental field for about 3 years now. I started as an intern at Dientes Community Dental Clinic, where I met Dr. Tran. The Doctors hired me even before I finished my dental assisting program. I started out not knowing much about dental insurance, but with the help of the doctors, I am now very experienced in this subject, as well as assisting and other front desk duties. I have a two-year old daughter named Aubrie, and when I’m not working, we like to go to the beach, eat good food, and take on new adventures. I love my job as well as the people I work with. I feel lucky to be a part of this family.

Marichelle: Hello! I have been a dental assistant for 6 years now and feel very lucky to be a part of the Landmark Dental Group family! This is my third year living in Santa Cruz. 🙂 When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My fiancé, Justin, and our 2-year old pup, Baxter, spend a lot of our time at the dog beach, hiking, and going on motorcycle rides along the coast.

Thelma: I am originally from the Philippines and my family and I immigrated to the Big Island of Hawaii, where I spent four years before moving to California in search of a better future and opportunities. I have been in the dental field since 1995. I love my job and my coworkers and our patients. I have been working with Dr. Young for 13 years and have been with Landmark for one year. When I have time outside of the office, I enjoy cooking and going to the beach with my husband and 14-year old son.

Kara: I am a native California girl, born in San Jose and have lived by the Monterey Bay for almost twenty years. I have been a dental assistant since 1993, practicing in both periodontal and general dental offices. When I am not working, you’ll find me doing yoga, traveling around the world, teaching meditation, or spending time with my two children on some new adventure.

Rebekah: I’ve been in the dental field for more than 13 years, with 6 of these as a registered dental assistant. When I’m not in the office, I enjoy riding my beach cruiser along West Cliff, hiking at Henry Cowell with my husband, and travelling the world! I love what I do and the great team at Landmark Dental Group!

Oral Health and Your Child

Any kids’ dentist in Santa Cruz will tell you that promoting good oral hygiene habits from the start will give your child the upper hand in protecting their smile. It may seem like your child shouldn’t have to worry about oral care until their permanent teeth emerge, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Check out these five facts you should know about oral health and your child.

Your Child Needs Regular Dental Visits

Your child needs to visit their dentist for regular cleanings and exams. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your child should start visiting the dentist once the first tooth has emerged or at least by their first birthday. During these exams, your dentist can get familiar with you and your child and look for potential future issues, such as crooked teeth. The dentist can also help educate you and your child regarding questions you may have, such as tips for at-home cleaning and care.

You Need to Care for Your Child’s Gums and Teeth at Home

Even before the first teeth appear, you want to clean your baby’s gums. A damp cloth is enough to remove any plaque and bacteria. Once the first tooth appears, it’s time to start brushing. Use a toothbrush designed for kids because they are small with soft bristles. Use a small dab of fluoride toothpaste when brushing. Remember that even once your child is capable of brushing their own teeth, you should continue to monitor them to ensure they are doing it correctly.

Primary Teeth Are Important for More Than Eating and Talking

Primary teeth don’t last long, but they do make it easier for your young child to eat and talk. However, primary teeth do more. Think of them as place holders. They create a pathway that allows your child’s permanent teeth to travel. If you neglect your child’s primary teeth and severe decay causes them to fall out, this path is lost. Orthodontic treatment may be required to help the permanent teeth grow properly. If your child develops tooth infections, that can impact the development of the permanent teeth, making them weaker for life.

Severe Primary Tooth Decay Can Affect the Jaw Bone

“Baby bottle tooth decay” is a common term that refers to severe tooth decay on the upper front teeth. Basically, this occurs when the teeth are exposed to a sugary liquid for a long period of time. A sugary liquid does not necessarily mean soda or sugary juice. It can be something as basic as milk. The sugar causes decay, which may even affect the underlying jaw bone. This can affect how the permanent teeth develop, which may lead to future oral problems, such as frequent tooth decay.

A Good Diet Can Go a Long Way to Protect Teeth

It isn’t just about keeping your child’s teeth clean. Everything your child puts into his or her body affects the teeth. Eating sugary beverages like soda or consuming sugary candy and pastries is detrimental to teeth. Encourage your children to drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and lean proteins. The best way you can get them to do this is by setting a good example. Avoid sugary drinks and foods yourself and focus on healthy meals.

Choosing a good kids’ dentist is one of the most important steps in caring for your child’s oral health, but you also have to promote healthy habits at home. For more information about dental care for kids, or for a kids’ dentist in the Santa Cruz area, contact Landmark Dental Group today.

A Santa Cruz Dentist for Your Entire Family

Santa Cruz Light House

Photo credit: lucky_photo | Dollar Photo Club

Going to the dentist is an important part of your health and well-being, but it can be difficult to find the right dentist for you and your family’s needs. Landmark Dental Group, a Santa Cruz dental office, is an excellent choice to consider.

Patients Range from Kids to the Elderly

Landmark Dental Group is perfect for the entire family because we accept patients of all ages. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking your child for their first dental exam when their first tooth appears, so even if your child is six months old, bring them in. The doctors and staff will help educate you on healthy tips for your child’s oral health.

We also have services specifically for geriatric patients. Older patients have to deal with different oral problems, but Landmark Dental has the skills to help. Dental issues that we can help with include gum disease, gum recession, dry mouth, root caries, missing teeth and ill-fitting dentures. Plus, we understand that many elderly patients have co-existing medical problems or may take several medications that could potentially affect their oral health.

A Wide Range of Services to Keep Your Mouth Healthy

The number one goal of dental care is to keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy. To do this, we offer a wide range of preventative and restorative dental services. Common services include regular cleanings/examinations, scaling and root planing, dental sealants, fillings, extractions and root canal therapy.

If you’re nervous about getting any work done, we here at Landmark can also provide sedation dentistry. You can choose inhalation, oral or IV conscious sedation to help make your entire trip to the dentist smooth. For inhalation sedation, you’ll be able to drive yourself home, but for oral and IV conscious sedation, you’ll need a ride.

Many Cosmetic Dental Procedures Offered

Sometimes, just keeping your mouth healthy isn’t enough. There are many cosmetic procedures that can give you that gorgeous smile you desire, and we offer many of these services. Cosmetic services include tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, porcelain bridges and dentures.

Perhaps one of the most exciting services offered at Landmark, however, is dental implants. Dental implants are the most ideal way to replace missing teeth. Instead of having to see another specialist for these services, Landmark Dental Group can do it for you.

Exceptional Experience and Skill

Perhaps one of the best reasons to choose Landmark Dental is because of the doctors. Trang K Tran, DDS is an exceptional Santa Cruz dentist. With a degree and honors from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, Dr. Tran continues to take courses, especially focusing on esthetic dentistry and root canal therapy.

Scott J Weston, DDS, is the other Santa Cruz dentist at Landmark Dental Group. He is another fantastic member of the team. Dr. Weston also earned his degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. While there, he earned the Francis A Sooy Award for Outstanding Dental Professional.
