Sedation Dentistry | Santa Cruz, Calif.
Our caring and supportive team understand that many people are anxious about going to the dentist or having dental work done. After listening to our patient's concerns, we strive to reverse any negative misconceptions or past traumatic experiences you've had by taking the time to explain what treatment is recommended, why it is recommended, and describe each step of the process, both before and as it is occurring.
However, some of our patients still prefer to not hear or feel anything during dental treatment. At our practice, we offer three different sedation options so that even going to the the dentist is a feasible option. At your first visit, our team will review your medical history and specific needs and will explain to you exactly how each technique works. We want you to feel comfortable and confident before moving forward towards a healthy, new smile.
Inhalational (Nitrous Oxide) Sedation: minimal
Also known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is our lowest form of sedation to "take the edge off" a bit. Totally safe, nitrous oxide is inhaled along with oxygen through a nose mask. The gas goes in and out of the body unmetabolized, so that at the end of your treatment, it can be completely flushed out with 100% oxygen. You can drive home and function like normal immediately following your appointment.
Oral Sedation: minimal-to-moderate
A pill (usually in the Valium family) is taken orally about an hour before the appointment. Depending on the dosage given, this form of sedation can range from minimal to moderate. Patients will feel groggy and drowsy, and may even doze off during the procedure. For your continued safety, we will require a family member or friend to drive you home afterwards and to stay with you for a few hours.
IV Conscious Sedation: moderate
On the day of your appointment, the Doctor will give you medication directly into a vein (intravenously) in small increments until the desired level of sedation is achieved. Our skilled team will make certain that you are completely comfortable prior to beginning any treatment and we will monitor you very closely while you are relaxing. IV sedation is extremely safe and effective and may leave you with little memory of your visit. As with oral sedation, we will require a family member or friend to drive you home afterwards and to stay with you for a few hours.
We are more than happy to explain to you the benefits and details of sedation dentistry. Please contact our office at any time for more information.
